Keep asking the question.
I often ask myself “what is the purpose of my being here, what is the reason for all of this?” Perhaps earlier in life there was a long list of things I wanted to do like buy a house, travel, have kids, excel in my career, be secure financially. Somehow in my 20’s and 30’s this all made sense. I really thought I had a lifetime to achieve everything I wanted for myself. It was all about me...
Now that I am half way through my life (assuming I live to 88 - 90), I find the question much simpler and the answers even shorter.
What are we all doing? What are our days filled with? Working to secure ourselves...perhaps for retirement. Running around in often stressful jobs in order to feel safer and more secure. Sometimes we are so stressed out we do not even notice the incredible toll all this stuff and stress is taking on our beautiful bodies. Then perhaps our bodies send us a wake-up call with some sort of injury or illness demanding our complete attention. We drop everything when this happens. Suddenly all of the ‘doings’ are truly meaningless and we begin to pay more attention to our relationships with loved-ones, more attention to our health and well-being, noticing our spiritual aspects. Maybe rather than physical illness, some sort of anxiety or depression sets in and we are forced to respond differently to ourselves and those in our lives. Sometimes relationship or career calamities befall and yet again we are shaken awake. One of our biggest barriers is our busy-ness. It keeps us unconscious.
When I am faced with a serious life-threatening or life-altering scenario, my consciousness is awakened... peaked... and I wonder “what is the purpose of my presence?”
I am going to tell you the short answer that I have come up with. I really think we are all stirring and fretting about town for one really simple reason. It might be embarrassing to admit that all your efforts have been to ‘be loved’. Yuck!! How pathetic is that!? Truly, I think we are all in a life-long effort to be loved, cherished, honored and respected for the incredible beings we are. Some of us try to have illustrious careers, some beautiful faces and bodies, others gobs of money, others superb and altruistic deeds on the planet, others with incredible intelligence, yet others by being superb partners/parents.
At the end of the story...we all just want to be loved.
So I have an incredibly cutting edge idea. Why not offer kindness, respect, honor to every person you meet? Why not in some uber simple way love them for what they are in that moment? It is not as though you have to live with them, share your home, raise kids and love them forever...just for that one single moment offer them some little aspect of love! Smile. A simple hello. A heart felt compliment. So easy.
If we are all looking for love, why not give it? How hard is that? Why do we withhold? If not to love each other, what is the purpose of our presence...to love and evolve. What is your answer to this question?
With love and gratitude,
Dawn
